Make your way to the edge of High Line Park in New York City to view an impressive collection of over 21,000 works of art. Located within the Whitney Museum of American Art, these unique pieces will give you a glimpse into the creative minds of renowned artists from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Focused exclusively on American art, the museum was founded in 1931 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. It provided the ideal setting for artists to exhibit and sell their art – something they had struggled to do before. With Whitney’s own 700 piece collection, the museum quickly became a popular stop among art enthusiasts. The collection has since grown, filling 8 stories in its new location in lower Manhattan.

Impressive Art Collection

Enjoy unobstructed views of art from more than 3,000 artists in the museum’s large column-free gallery spaces. Within the collection are numerous prints, sculptures, drawings, paintings, photography, installation art, and video. Some of these include ‘The Black Woman’ by Elizabeth Catlett, Daniel Chester French’s sculpture ‘Standing Lincoln’, as well as an extensive film collection by Andy Warhol.

Intriguing Exhibitions

The museum also hosts several exhibitions throughout the year. Watch live performances such as ‘Figure Ground: Beyond the White Field’ for an intriguing view of how people navigate through life. Contemplate fate-based mythologies as you watch the series, ‘12 Shouts to the Ten Forgotten Heavens’, or participate in interactive performances such as ‘Red View’. Every 2 years, the museum also hosts the Whitney Biennel to showcase the work of lesser-known artists.

Family Fun

Watch your child’s imagination in action as you join them to work on an art project in the Whitney’s Hearst Artspace. With new projects every week, your children are sure to have fun during each visit. The museum also hosts other events for families, such as Stroller Tours for new moms and dads and tea time for families.

If you are an art enthusiast or want to expose your children to the wonderful gift of creativity, then be sure to check out the Whitney Museum of American Art next time you’re in Manhattan.
