Climb on board the ferry and head across the New York Harbor to Governors Island for fun in the sun and a walk through history.

Before the island was public land, it was home to several military bases dating back to the Colonial period. It was then used in the American Revolutionary War in 1776 and in the War of 1812. Along with the Governor’s House, two historic forts remain today and are available for tours – the star-shaped Fort Jay and Castle Williams, the nation’s most well preserved circular fort.

This 172-acre former military base is now a popular destination for history enthusiasts, art, food and recreation.

Fun in the Sun

Get away from city traffic and enjoy a walk or bike ride along miles of trail on the island. Bring your own bike or simply rent one once you get there. Bicycles can be rented from Citi Bike or for more family options check out Blazing Saddles for cruisers, quadricycles, kid bikes, kid trailers and more.

Gather your family and glide down 57 feet on New York City’s tallest slide. Get soaked at the play fountains or climb the structures and soar on the swings at the Hammock Grove Play area. Enjoy a game of mini-golf or with a fun game of softball or soccer.

Arts and Entertainment

Governors Island hosts a variety of exhibitions as part of its public art program. Visit the island to see new and annual shows including the annual Jazz Party, art fairs, performances and storytelling festivals. Also be sure to visit Rachel Whiteread’s Cabin set on top of Discovery Hill for a distant retreat experience.

Satisfy your Hunger

To satisfy your food craving, check out the multiple food vendors for delicious choices such as steak, curry, tacos, bratwursts and ice cream. If you’d prefer, bring your own lunch and enjoy a relaxing picnic on the spacious green lawn or at one of several picnic tables spread throughout the island.
